Child Death Reviews

All child deaths are reviewed with the aim to identify learning to prevent other children from dying. Child Deaths are reviewed by the Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP). This is a joint panel across Durham and Darlington Safeguarding Partnerships.

The Panel is a sub-committee of both Durham and Darlington Safeguarding Partnerships and is accountable to the relevant Partnership.

When a baby dies

The death of a baby is a tragedy that leaves families shocked, devastated and lost. The Lullaby Trust [External Link] knows the impact a sudden infant death can have on a family and has created the following booklets. These booklets aim to help explain the complex thoughts and feelings of grief as well as the practicalities of an infant bereavement. The booklets can be posted by Helpline staff or downloaded.

When a baby dies suddenly and unexpectedly [PDF document] outlines the practical processes and arrangements that are necessary after the death of an infant, and some supportive information around grief and loss. The booklet also offers suggestions for supporting other children and family members.

When my baby died… parents tell their stories [PDF document] is a collection of writings by parents who have also experienced the sudden and unexpected death of their baby.
